Ypres

Belgium

Battlefield Tours

tarvel guru branding

Why is Ypres an important place?

"Ypres is the base for most people who are exploring the WW1 battlefields of Flanders. It's a wonderful, small town and is the heart of the battlefield sites."

What can I do and see in Ypres?

"Home to the Menin Gate, every night since the end of WW1 the Ypres Buglers recite the Last Post. It's a moving service as you stand amongst the 54,000 names of those who don't have a grave."

How should I best explore the battlefields in Flanders?

"Get a local historian! You will learn SO much and can tailor it. Alternatively, you can drive or cycle around yourself. But you need to do a lot of research to get the most value out of it!"

What are your favourite places to visit?

"The Hill 62 Museum lets you walk some of the trenches which is humbling. The Christmas Day truce statue in Mesen and Tyne Cot are the most moving places for me."

How long should I spend in Ypres?

"Dedicate at least 2 whole days. Ypres has a great museum, as well as lots of bars with good Belgian beer. Then at least 1 full day to tour the main battlefield sites! There is lots to see around here!"
